In 2001, the immensely popular gameboy advance hit the market. Five years later, when the Nintendo DS had already appeared, Nintendo licensed its gameboy advance hardware to Visteon. A company that specialised in developing in-car DVD players. This led to the introduction of a portable DVD player that also allowed you to play native gameboy advance games.
The collaboration between Nintendo and Visteon was announced at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show in 2006. The Visteon was subsequently announced in July 2006. The Visteon was not available at regular consumer electronics shops, but had to be purchased through a limited number of car manufactures (BMW and Nissan). In addition, the price of $1,200 was very high.
The Vistion resembled a regular DVD player that you came across a lot the mid-2000s. Clam shell design, silver colour and an LCD screen. On the right side was a drawer where you could put the regular GBA cartridges. A port could also be found for system link. If you then pressed the AUX button, the GBA game started right away. The build in screen had three levels of brightness that you could only control via an included remote control.
The Visteon’s controller is almost perfect triangle, but was nevertheless very comfortable to use. It worked via infrared. The Visteon had real GBA hardware. However, the games didn’t look great. This was because games were scaled up considerably, with no increase in resolution. This resulted in blurry visuals. The screen quality is not bad for the time, but not great by today’s standards. In addition, you are faced with large black bars while gaming. You can also connect the Viston to your TV via a Video cable.
The Visteon has a Dockable Entertainment System for a reason. You could dock it and place it on the inside of the roof of your car and fold down the screens.
The Visteon Dockable Entertainment System is a very rare console today.
